Why we all cannot get along

In 1956 San Antonio segregation was still very much in force. People of color had to be careful. Some behavior was allowed others not. For instance colored people were allowed to ride public buses but could not eat in certain public spaces. Walgreens drug stores were not segregated to people of color wishing to buy items, however, as I learned the hard way not to use the sit down soda fountain. My Mexican school friend tried to sit down for milk shakes but were told that he could be served but not me. We were told Mexicans could be served but not blacks. I still remembered that he accompanied me to the rear of place to eat next to the dish washer. I knew better but had no desire to make waves. I went along to get along. I think the athletes in Yuba city went along with white athletes when holding their slave auction. The desire to get along for a practical joke is dangerous. Not only does it make them look like fools but hurts the striving of all people to understand the truth that racism is vicious. What happens when the children hold a mock lynching or burn someone up. This kind of thing encourages more of this. Hate is hate whether you smile and call it something else or not. I was wrong in 1956. I let it slide. My Mexican friend had the courage to not stay there alone, but we both should have left and told Walgreens to keep their Malt!!
